Sub-picosecond intermediates in energy transfer and electron transfer in reaction centers of purple bacteria

Abstract

Using femtosecond near-IR absorption spectroscopy with tunable pulses of 30 fs we have investigated the controversial issues of the pathways and time scales of the processes of energy transfer from the accessory bacteriochlorphylls B and the bacteriopheophytins H to the primary donor P and of electron transfer from P* to HL. Using a compressed continuum for probing the transient spectra allows to monitor the evolution of the donor and acceptor states in the same experiment.
