Optical Characteristics of Higher Harmonics in Free-Electron Sources of Coherent Radiation

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

By prebunching an electron beam before injecting it into an undulator it is possible to enhance the spontaneous radiation emitted by the electrons and modify its coherence properties. A high power laser tuned to a harmonic of the undulator radiation and used in conjunction with the magnetic structure produces an energy modulation in the electron beam. The intrinsic dispersion of the magnetic field converts the energy modulation into a density modulation.
