Abstract

Substituted ethylenes and polyenes are simple representatives of a large class of molecules that can undergo rapid photoinduced cis-trans isomerization. We are employing a combination of steady-state uv resonance Raman and picosecond time-resolved absorption and Raman spectroscopies to probe the dynamics of photo isomerization and electronic and vibrational relaxation in cisstilbene, butadiene, and hexatriene, with particular emphasis on the solvent dependence of the photophysics.
