Doubly resonant generation of stimulated Brillouin scattering in dielectric spheres

Abstract

A transparent dielectric sphere can be a unique nonlinear optical laboratory when the ratio χ =2πa/λ of its circumference to the laser wavelength lies in the range of ~25–50. In this regime the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) Mie-Debye resonances of the sphere (Fig. 1) are broad enough that the laser and Brillouin waves can coincide with the same resonance, thus simultaneously increasing the Brillouin gain and lengthening the path within the sphere by several orders of magnitude for both the laser and Brillouin fields.
