Abstract
Attractive features of monomode fiber lasers include their low threshold, high gain, and broad gain bandwidth. We review a number of experimental results that exploit these features; for example, the low threshold has permitted diode pumped operation of fibers doped with Nd, Er, Yb and fiber codoped with Yb and Er. Tm doped fiber which lases at ~1.9 μm is also potentially capable of diode pumped operation. Very high gain can be achieved for input pump powers of a few tens of milliwatts.
