Abstract

Predictions of ultralow losses in fluorozirconate fibers at around 2.5 µm have brought about an interest in rare earth doped fibers for amplification and laser applications in this spectral range. We are investigating laser action directly in these materials and recently reported1 pulsed laser action in a thulium doped ZBLAN fiber at 2.3 µm pumped by an alexandrite laser. We now report for the first time, we believe, lasing in a thulium doped ZBLAN fiber at 2.29µm pumped by a laser diode array. Continuous wave laser emission at 2.7 µm in an erbium doped fluorozirconate fiber pumped by an argon laser has also been reported.2
