All-Optical Kerr Amplification and Wavelength Switching on a Single Biréfringent Fiber

Abstract

An all-optical Kerr amplifier using a single fibre is reported. The polarisation of a high power optical pump is modulated by a weak optical signal, via the high speed Kerr effect. The information is switched from the signal wavelength to the pump wavelength. A novel form of cascading of Kerr amplifiers is described whereby gains of 100 are projected, limited by the onset of other optical non-linearities.
