Abstract

Diamond is a material of exceptional properties. It is hard, transmissive from the near UV into the IR, has a high thermal conductivity, a wide electronic band gap, and is generally considered to be chemically inert. From a thin film coating standpoint its low thermal expansion coefficient provides adhesion difficulties. If adhesion problems were solved, rigidity would make stress induced cleavage a problem.
