Vibration-Induced Modulation of Fiberguide Transmission

Abstract

We have observed vibration-induced intensity modulation of light transmitted in bent fiberguides. Intensity modulation of several percent results from vibration amplitudes much less than the fiberguide diameter when the static configuration involves radii of curvature near 3 cm. The modulation has been observed in fiberguides which transmit many modes (≈300) or just a few (6). We interpret the effect as modulated bending loss.
