Abstract
When transmitting high bit-rates through optical fibres, fibres should be used where the signal should travel in the fundamental mode only. In perfectly straight and uniform fibres no delay differences occur and pulse broadening is mainly caused by material dispersion. In cabled fibres, however, microbending occurs which influences the mode propagation.
