Abstract
Erbium-doped silica fibers may be used for temperature measurements. When the temperature is kept constant, the technique may be used to determine doping non-uniformity. The temperature error arising from the rare-earth dopant non-uniformity in commercially available fibers used for temperature sensing is estimated at +/~1.5 C. This corresponds to less than 6% of spatial doping non-uniformity.
