Abstract
The importance of increasing the repeater spacing in optical transmission systems continues to grow because it is one of the most effective ways of realizing economic communication systems. The repeater spacing is limited by optical attenuation and the optical pulse distortion. Figure 1 is an optical-power-level diagram for a long-span transmission system. The various approaches for increasing the repeater intervals are outlined in Table 1. This paper reviews recently developed fiber techniques designed to overcome the loss limit in optical transmission systems.
