Abstract

We propose a new parameter to describe the noise performance of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). ft is based on the fact that the noise of a laser amplified by an EDFA is very similar (formally and substantially) to the noise of a laser with a higher relative intensity noise (RIN).
