Abstract

P2O5-SiO2 glasses are very attractive as ultralow-loss optical- fiber glass materials because their Rayleigh scattering loss is lower than that of pure SiO2 glass and their infrared absorption loss has a comparable value.1 The lowest Rayleigh-scattering coefficient to date of 0.63 dB km-1 μm-4 was reported in a multimode fiber with a P2O5-SiO2 core and B2O3-SiO2 cladding.2 However, the total loss of this fiber was more than 1 dB/km in the 1.5-(μm wavelength region because of the high infrared absorption loss of B2O3-SiO2 glass. With regard to single-mode fiber, pure-SiO2-core fiber has the lowest reported Rayleigh-scattering loss.
