Abstract
It is well known that the composition of a glass has a strong influence on the optical properties of rare-earth ions doped within. In particular, the high phonon energy of high-phosphate-content glasses, compared to silica, significantly increases the energy-transfer efficiencies of ytterbium-sensitized erbium- doped glasses,1 which are of particular interest for use as high- power optical amplifiers.
