Abstract
Since waveguide parameters of an optical fiber and those of a photonic device are optimized independently, their mode fields usually have quite different shapes and sizes. Therefore it is a common practice to insert a lens system between them so that a field-mismatch loss may be reduced. However, it is not easy to achieve low cost and rugged coupling with this scheme.
