Abstract

Packet switching of single words is desirable for large scale, tightly coupled computer interconnects. The cost of access protocols when using a shared medium does not scale well with network size. Multistage networks with multipath characteristics provide efficient use of optical bandwidth as the number of nodes increases beyond several hundred. In this paper we demonstrate a self-routing switch with contention resolution amenable to these types of network.
