Abstract
With the successful widespread deployment of lightwave transmission systems for long distance and trunk use, the attention in many research laboratories is shifting to distribution and switching. While the timetable and ultimate role for photonic switching are yet to be established, the level of research activity is increasing. This tutorial presents an overview of current research activities in photonic switching. Fundamentals of switching systems are reviewed; the motivation and potential advantages of photonics in switching are discussed.
