Abstract
The substrate around which the Sealed Disk Assembly (SDA) is developed is a web similar in some respects to those upon which photographic emulsions are coated. As with other substrates for optical disks, before the sensitive recording layers are applied, a surfacing treatment is given to provide extraordinary smoothness. Coatings placed upon properly prepared webs having suitable initial characteristics are equal in quality to those put on glass disks or on aluminum disk substrates, and have defect levels low enough to support optical digital data storage and retrieval applications.
