Abstract
An equipment backplane has to provide many parallel data channels running across its width with access points at the card locations. Laser arrays collimated by microlenses offer the required flexibility of tap points but the packing density is limited by diffraction, making for inefficient use of chip area and causing the number of channels in a given cross-section to fall with increasing interconnect length.
