Abstract

Exciton, which is a coherent superposition of constituent atoms, has a macroscopic transition dipole moment and a large oscillator strength. The exciton, however, behaves almost as a harmonic oscillator so that it cannot contribute in itself to the nonlinear response. Therefore we propose two new functionality materials with large optical nonlinearity by making the exciton deviate very much from harmonic oscillator and at the same time making use of the large oscillator strength of the exciton.
