Abstract
This paper presents a coupled mode theory of self-induced changes in the polarization state of an intense light beam in a birefringent nonlinear medium. The analysis is relevant to the operation of recently demonstrated all-optical logic gates, pulse shapers, and intensity discriminators that rely on intensity-dependent polarization states in birefringent optical fibers.1-3
