Abstract
The use of a doped fiber amplifier to amplify the return signal from a 1.06 μm solid-state lidar is examined. Two schemes are considered: heterodyne and direct detection. For the heterodyne scheme the signal will be amplified with the fiber amplifier and mixed with the local oscillator in a fiber optic evanescent wave coupler. Signal-to-noise ratio and overall sensitivity are evaluated for each case.
