Annular apodizer for low sensitivity to defocus and spherical aberration

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

For many practical uses in microelectronics, robotics, microscopy, and medical imaging, it is desirable to increase the focal depth and to decrease the influence of spherical aberration. It has been known for some years that annular apertures can be used for this purpose; in particular, some scanning optical microscopes exploit quite well the characteristics of annular apertures.
