Abstract
Previous studies have reported using semiconductor optical amplifiers as phase modulators 3 dB bandwidths of up to 500 MHz1, including baseband DPSK transmission of 140 Mb/s2 and 565 Mb/s3. In this paper we show that, when operated at high bias, an optical amplifier has a modulation bandwidth of over 3 GHz, with a phase response of 0.02 rad/mA, equivalent to a Vπ of 8 V. Use of the amplifier as a high frequency modulator is demonstrated by transmitting a 100 Mb/s DPSK signal on a 3.6 GHz subcarrier.
