Abstract

Er3+-doped silica-based single-mode fibers are attractive for optical amplification in 1.5μ m region1). Lumped amplifiers such as pre-amplifiers, post-amplifiers and repeaters need the fibers with high gain and broad band. On the other hand, low concentration fibers, of which Er3+ concentration is as low as a few ppm, offer attractive prospects for the practical use of distributed active transmission lines2). In this paper, we report two applications of Er3+-doped fibers fabricated by VAD method and molucular stuffing: lumped amplifiers and distributed active transmission lines.
