Abstract

Laser diode pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) have high potential for optical pre- and booster-amplifiers in 1.5μm optical communication systems(1)(2). To date, three kinds of LD, with wavelengths of 0.81μm, 0.98μm, and 1.48 μm, have been studied as pumping light sources. From among these, the 0.98 μm LD pumped EDFA demonstrated the highest gain coefficient and the lowest noise characteristics(3)(4). We reported that a highly efficient EDFA with a gain coefficient of 4.9 dB/mW could be fabricated by taking account of the erbium concentration effect(5)(6)
