Collision-induced timing jitter in dispersion-managed soliton systems

Abstract

Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) offers the potential for considerable increase in data transmission rates. However, it also raises a number of issues of theoretical and practical importance. One of these issues is the timing displacement effects due to nonuniform soliton collisions in the presence of amplifiers, which induce permanent frequency and velocity shifts of the solitons [1]. In a previous letter [2] we developed a stochastic analysis of collision-induced timing jitter when amplifiers are present. In this paper we include the effects of filters and dispersion management in the analysis. Given typical values of the system parameters, we are able to calculate explicitly the total root mean square timing jitter, the expected bit error rate and the maximum length of error-free transmission.
