Abstract

Over the last few years many exciting results have been obtained in producing ultrashort optical pulses by passive modelocking of a laser system using semiconductor based saturable absorber mirrors1,2. A wide variety of laser systems have been modelocked in this manner, and the results obtained indicate that this technique opens up the possibility for the use of a modelocked laser outside the physicist's laboratory.
