Abstract

Laser beam welding is widely accepted as a welding technology to make better products in terms of weight saving, dimensional accuracy and structural strength in automotive industry. Coatings on the surface of automotive parts are common where enhancement to corrosion resistance, wear resistance as well as other mechanical properties is required. However, if the coated surface is one of the joining interfaces, the coating material has an adverse effect on laser welding process or the weld integrity.
