Abstract
Different from the conventional functional materials synthesized to meet the application needs, metamaterials provide unprecedented degrees of freedom to manipulate THz waves with periodic or aperiodic arrangements of resonant or non-resonant inclusions at sub-wavelength scale, and demonstrate unique capabilities to tailor the refraction index and reshape the wavefront in a predefined manner. Such properties have aroused great interests among scientists and engineers due to their application potentials in various areas. Here we will report some recent progress in controlling the THz scattering features via metasurfaces, which are actually 2D representation of the metamaterials with ultrathin profile [1]. By arranging binary elements in accordance to the predesigned coding sequence, we successfully synthesize the THz scattering pattern in a broad spectrum, and put forward the scheme to modulate THz scattering waves dynamically [2-5]. Such technique may offer a new route to design novel THz antennas, imaging and radar systems.
