Fast transmission changes induced by a quadratic nonlinear interaction within a microcavity

Abstract

In a cascaded configuration, the quadratic nonlinear interaction can be used to induce a change in the effective index of refraction of a nonlinear material [1]. When this change is induced within a microcavity or a 1-D photonic crystal the enhanced interaction within the structure may lead to a large change in the transmission or reflection properties of that material. Recently, it was theoretically shown that in a nonlinear microcavity an intense beam at the second harmonic (SH) frequency can induce, via a cascading nonlinear interaction, a reflection for a beam at the fundamental frequency [2]. Moreover, it was shown that the microcavity can strongly alter the dependence of the reflectivity or transmission with the input phase difference between both fields and in certain cases make the changes almost input phase independent In this paper, we have experimentally measured these type of changes in transmission and we showed that the duration of the changes is only limited by the time width of the pulses.
