Abstract
Lasers have become reliable tools for chemical and materials processing applications. An outstanding example is the separation of stable isotopes. Over the past 20 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has developed a laser-based method for separating isotopes. The focus of the LLNL Program has been the enrichment of uranium for use in commercial nuclear reactors. Multi-hundred watt copper vapor lasers, dye lasers and separator component technologies have been successfully demonstrated.
