Vibrational dynamics of liquids and glasses probed with IR photon echoes

Abstract

A variety of psec infrared (IR) experimental methods are used to examine the vibrational dynamics of solute molecules in liquids and glasses. The methods include the first vibrational photon echo experiments conducted in the liquid and solid phases.1 These experiments are performed using the Stanford superconducting linac pumped free electron laser which provides a source of tunable ~ 2 ps IR pulses. In addition to the echo experiments, pump/probe experiments2 and IR pump/anti-Stokes Raman probe experiments3 were performed. These later experiments are conducted using both the FEL and a high repetition rate conventional source of psec pulses.
