Abstract

The semiclassical equations for the electric field, atomic polarization, and population inversion in a single mode ring laser with homogeneously broadened two level atoms are under certain conditions isomorphic with the Lorenz equation celebrated for their chaotic solutions. The optically pumped far infrared NH3 laser has been shown to exhibit chaotic intensity fluctuations consistent in almost every detail with the Lorenz equations, in spite of some controversy about the applicability of the model to the optically pumped situation.[1, 2]
