Dark Soliton Break-up and Optical Vortices in the 3-Dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

Abstract

Dark soliton solutions of the 2-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (2D NLS) are, strictly, defined on an infinite plane background,[1] however we concern ourselves here with their manifestation on gaussian beams and in periodic lattices. No higher-order dark soliton solutions are known and our series of initial value problems display fission and interactions. In the 3D NLS, the complex field envelope, F, evolves according to η is positive for a self-focussing medium and negative in the self-defocussing case, while α parameterises diffraction.
