Abstract

Reflection of sodium atoms from a travelling evanescent laser light wave has been observed previously in this laboratory[1] and elsewhere.[2, 3] This paper establishes the conditions required for observing the diffraction of an atomic sodium beam from counter propagating evanescent laser light fields forming a standing evanescent wave. Some preliminary results will be presented.
