Abstract

If a perfect two-level atom instantly starts to interact with a monochromatic laser field, the atom will be driven back and forth between the two levels due to absorption and stimulated emission. If we neglect spontaneous emission the atom will oscillate between the two levels like a harmonic oscillator.
