Abstract
In order to cool ion beams by means of the radiation pressure force of a single laser beam an additional auxiliary force is required to reach a “stable point”, such that there is a velocity ν* for which the sum of these two forces vanishes and the slope of the total force is negative. In this case the slower particles are accelerated and the faster particles are decelerated, i. e. the ensemble is cooled. Figure 1 illustrates some possible situations.
