Abstract
Standard laser cooling experiments with stored ion beams lead to a fast reduction of longitudinal beam temperatures1 but do not directly affect the transverse motion of ions. However, the Coulomb interaction between the ions results in a coupling between the longitudinal and the transverse degrees of freedom. Thus energy of the transverse motion can be dissipated by the longitudinal cooling force in an indirect way.
