Abstract
Atomic hydrogen is, because of its simplicity, well suited for stringent tests of fundamental laws of physics. The discovery of the Lamb shift has given rise to the introduction of quantum electrodynamics. On the way to a more stringent test of this theory, the 100 MHz natural linewidth of the nearby 2P state has become a limiting factor in radiofrequency measurements of the 2S Lamb shift.
