Precision measurement at the 1S Lamb shift in atomic hydrogen

Abstract

Of all the atomic transitions that can be studied with laser spectroscopy the 1S—2S transition in atomic hydrogen is one of the most fundamental. Its extremely narrow natural linewidth of 1.3 Hz promises an ultimate resolution of 5 parts in 1016. Since one can perform highly accurate calculations of hydrogen energy levels, measurement of the 1S—2S transition frequency allows for stringent tests of quantum electrodynamics and promises accurate new values of fundamental constants.
