Abstract

The recent breakthrough in producing C60 clusters[1] opens up the possibility to investigate the optical properties of this fascinating new material. In this respect, it is of particular interest that C60 clusters are found in a crystallized form (solid C60). Recent band structure calculations[2,3] show that solid C60 is a semiconductor with a direct, but optically forbidden energy gap at the Brillouin-zone boundary.
