Abstract

The recent breakthrough by Krätschmer and co-workers1 on the macroscopic preparation of C60 has stimulated intensive experimental studies of this novel form of carbon. Measurements of the x-ray diffraction of C60 powder at room temperature2 indicates that in the solid phase the molecules of C60 form an fcc lattice. Electron-energy-loss spectroscopy on C60 films,3 deposited on Si, indicates a relative broad electronic resonance peak around 2.2 eV. Band-structure calculations of pure C60 in the fcc lattice4 demonstrate that the direct energy gap at the X point is about 1.5 eV.
