Mode-evolution-type optical beam combiner for coherent receivers

Abstract

We have used an asymmetric x-junction (ASX) as a polarization-independent sum and difference beam combiner. This component is integrable with adiabatic polarization splitters to build a fully passive integrated front end for a polarization-diversity coherent optical receiver.1 The advantage of the adiabatic junction device over directional coupler (DC) beam combiners is tire absence of a strict interaction length required for balanced separation.
