Abstract
We report the first buried proton-exchanged LiNbO3 waveguides. Buried guides, in which the mode lies below the surface of the substrate, have lower propagation losses than those with the mode at the surface, and the mode shape can be made more symmetric for better coupling to fibers. Buried modes may also eliminate the need for buffer layers in electro-optic devices.
