Recovery of second order optical nonlinearity in annealed proton-exchanged LiNbO3

Abstract

Proton-exchange in LiNbO3 is extremely attractive for fabricating guided wave photonic devices. Owing to their higher photorefractive damage threshold, proton-exchanged (PE) waveguides provide a distinct advantage over their Ti-indiffused counterparts for applications such as nonlinear frequency conversion. It has been reported that PE waveguides tend to exhibit lower electro-optic and second-harmonic coefficients.1,2 Since stable, low-loss waveguides with restored electro-optic coefficients can be obtained by annealing the proton-exchanged guides,2 it is expected that SHG coefficients can also be restored by annealing.
