Abstract
We have made electronically-tuned erbium-doped fiber ring lasers using two very different means of wavelength selection: a liquid-crystal-filled Fabry-Perot etalon filter1 and a frequency-shift-free two-stage integrated acousto-optic filter.2 Both lasers exhibited a broad tuning range (50 nm), continuous tunability, linewidths of only a few kHz, 70% internal quantum efficiency and a switching speed of over 100 kHz (for the acoustically-tuned laser). The laser tuned by the liquid crystal filter has a switching speed of at most a few milliseconds.
