Abstract
With the increasing importance of erbium doped fibers for amplifiers in 1.5 μm optical communication systems, there is a need to develop efficient sources capable of producing ultrashort pulses at high powers and high repetition rates. Modelocked laser diodes, in addition to having low output powers require high-frequency current modulation to achieve high repetition rates. Passive modelocking allows any number of pulses to exist in the cavity simultaneously.
