TE-TM Mode Splitter Using Branching Waveguides Made by Proton Exchange and Ti Diffusion

Abstract

Optical TE-TM mode splitters have been formed with a directional coupler [1] and a Y-branch using electro-optic effects [2]. A polarization sensitive waveguide can be fabricated by PE technique because the PE process increases the extraordinary index ne alone. Hence, by using a combination of a PE waveguide and a TI one, TE-TM mode separation can be achieved. Fig. 1 shows a Y-branch TE-TM mode splitter on a Z-cut LiNbO3, where Arm 2 is formed by PE with post-annealing, whereas Arm 1 and the input waveguide are made by TI.
